Abstract

This study presents the development of a new family of modular connectors for drill strings used in rotary drilling in the copper mining industry, addressing the limitations of conventional B-type threaded joints. The innovative C17 and C20 thread profiles, designed through finite element simulations and validated by analytical calculations, significantly reduce stress concentrations (by up to 28.4% for C17) and improve sealing performance through optimized runout geometry. The design integrates a proprietary elastic locking mechanism, eliminating the need for separate friction rings, thus reducing assembly and disassembly time by up to 35% in field conditions. Standardization of connector bodies for HEX 22 and HEX 28 rods, coupled with optimized material usage (up to 15% savings), enables high repeatability in CNC manufacturing while maintaining critical dimensional tolerances of ±0.05 mm. Laboratory and field tests confirmed improved durability, ease of operation, and compatibility with tools from multiple suppliers. The proposed solution meets operational demands for reliability, safety, and efficiency in underground mining, offering strong potential for commercialization and adaptation to other drilling applications, including tunnelling and geothermal projects.
